Arizona PIRG had a state-wide day of action themed "We
<3 Transit."
Arizona PIRG volunteers on the downtown
campus collected 70 valentine's messages to Congressman Pastor.
The volunteers asked students to sign and decorate red cards that said "Valentine's
Day is about commitments. We love public transportation and we want you to take
us into the 21st century of transit." The cards were decorated with heart
stickers and play money. The cards will be taped to a pink
tablecloth and delivered to Pastor's office.
For the “We <3 Transit” day at ASU Tempe, volunteers collected 456
signatures of support as well as 11 photo petitions for Rep. Harry Mitchell to
increase funding for public transit in the economic recovery package! ASU Tempe students signed hearts that
said "I <3 public transit" and stuck them on a giant light rail poster with a
picture of Congressman Mitchell riding in the back of the car. The front window
of the light rail poster was cut out for students to pose in. Written on the
poster was “We [heart] Public Transit” and “Let’s cut our oil dependence, reduce
air pollution, and get Arizona’s economy moving!”

Also at ASU Tempe, Arizona PIRG
students organized a critical mass around campus; about 30 students rode in
support of alternative transportation and solving global warming. Students had
put up flyers telling people to wear red in solidarity of the day, and most of
the participants did! For visibility, volunteers distributed 1,900 heart-shaped
flyers advertising the event on bikes all over campus, put up 10 giant
heart-shaped posters that covered one side of the kiosk, as well as 100 posters,
and put up two giant yard signs in high-traffic areas. The State Press covered the event and an article will be published in Friday's
paper. Check out the story at
